Part 4 - Jane Tanner’s Lie

Jane Tanner’s Lie

The discrepancy that proves Jane Tanner lied.

Jane Tanner’s lie caused Gerry McCann’s lie.

In Gerry McCann’s 1st statement given on 4th May 2007 at 11:15am, he discusses the timeline of events on the evening of 3rd May 2007 between 8:30-10:00pm

He says that he went to check at his apartment at 9:05pm. On his return to the Tapas bar he stopped to talk to another holiday maker called Jeremy Wilkins.

They chatted for a few minutes after which he returned to the Tapas bar.

He does not say in this statement what time Jane Tanner leaves the table, all he says if that at some point on one of Jane Tanner’s checks, she said she saw a man carrying a child.

He does state that it was while he was talking to Jeremy Wilkins outside the gate to the McCann’s apartment.

If Gerry McCann had just been a few moments in his apartment as he said he had been, spoke to Jez and returned to the restaurant before Jane Tanner left, he most likely would have remembered her leaving and returning, but Gerry McCann did not say he remembered her leaving the table or returning.

If Jane Tanner had walked directly past Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins as she said she did (her statement to follow) then surely he would have spoke about this while discussing his conversation with Jeremy Wilkins, as Jane Tanner would have walked along the same path they were stood on while talking to each other, and it would be impossible not to be seen by at least one of them.

Jane Tanner’s statements was given to the Portuguese authorities on 4th May 2007 at 11:30am. During the time she was giving her statement, Gerry McCann’s had started 15 minutes before with a different inspector.

Jane Tanner didn’t know what Gerry McCann would be asked or what he would say, and Gerry McCann didn’t knew what Jane Tanner would be asked and what she would say.

So, Jane Tanner gave her statement to the best of her knowledge.

Jane Tanner remembers Gerry McCann leaving and she followed soon after.

She says she saw Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins stood outside the gate of the McCann’s apartment talking. She says she walked directly past them. She said Gerry McCann was in the Tapas restaurant when she returned.

Jane Tanner also drew a sketch of where Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins were stood. (3)

So while Gerry McCann gave his statement and said he spoke to Jeremy Wilkins, he didn’t mention Jane Tanner walking past them both, even though, according to Jane Tanner, she walked directly past them and drew a sketch showing where they were stood.

This was a major discrepancy between Jane Tanner and Gerry McCann.

There wasn’t enough information to prove either one of them lied at this point, but there was certainly enough information which meant this needed to be looked in to further.

To get more information, we needed to look at the 3rd person involved in this incident, Jeremy Wilkins.

Jeremy Wilkins gave his hand written statement to the Portuguese authorities on 7th May 2007

Jeremy Wilkins says that he spoke to Gerry McCann outside the gate of the McCann’s apartment.

He says he didn’t see anyone with a child, nor does he state anything about someone (Jane Tanner) walking past.

Jeremy Wilkins gave another statement on 5th November 2007

Once again, he confirmed where Gerry McCann was stood. He even described the direction Gerry was facing and the direction he was facing. He confirmed that he did not see anyone at all walk past them (Jane Tanner should have approached him to his left) and he didn’t see a man with child to the right of him (Jane Tanner would have walked to Jeremy’s right when she saw the stranger)

Jeremy Wilkins also drew a sketch to show where he was stood with Gerry McCann outside the apartment.

So if Jeremy Wilkins says he was stood outside the McCann’s apartment and Jane Tanner supposedly saw them both stood outside the gate of the McCann’s apartment and Gerry McCann also says he left his apartment and bumped in to Jeremy Wilkins, how did Jane walk past both them without being seen at all, and then see a stranger with a child which neither of the men saw.

It doesn’t seem possible that this would happen to anyone. Especially on a quiet street with no-one else around and as Jeremy Wilkins said, he could see clearly, so it wasn’t dark enough to cause Jane Tanner to go unnoticed.

From these findings, we started to assume that Jane Tanner had lied about waking past the men.

This could still only be an assumption without looking further in to the groups statements to see who else confirms that Jane left the table at the time she said she did.

While Gerry McCann was giving his 1st statement at 11:15am, and Jane Tanner’s started 15 minutes after Gerry McCann’s at 11:30am, Matthew Oldfield also gave his at 11:30am.

We decided to look at what Matthew Oldfield has to say about Jane Tanner leaving the table. The group were giving their statements to the best of their knowledge, and every movement of every person had to be accounted for.

This is what Matthew Oldfield said regarding the Thursday night between 9:00-10:00pm

Matthew Oldfield does not state that Jane left the table at all, not just at the 9:15pm check, but also at 9:40pm (when she goes back to Russell O’Brien, who he also has mentioned, this will be discussed later)

Matthew Oldfield does not say that Jane Tanner left the restaurant after Gerry McCann, or that she returned after Gerry McCann returned. He also doesn’t mention the abductor that she supposedly saw that night.

Therefore, out of 3 members of the group who have all been interviewed at the same time the following day after Madeleine McCann’s abduction, only one member had said that Jane Tanner left at 9:15pm and that was a Jane Tanner herself. Not Gerry McCann. Not Matthew Oldfield.

Jeremy Wilkins who isn’t a member of the group who went on holiday together also said that he didn’t see Jane Tanner walk past when she said she did.

Two members of the group don’t remember her leaving or returning, and one reliable witness also states he did not see Jane Tanner when he should have seen her.

This already proves that Jane Tanner lied, but to confirm it further, we continued to look through the statements in order.

The next member of the group to give their statement was Madeleine McCann’s Mother, Kate McCann.

Kate McCann gave her statement later in the afternoon after Gerry McCann, Jane Tanner and Matthew Oldfield had given theirs.

Due to the fact the group were interviewed as witnesses and not suspects, this allowed the group to talk between giving their statements to the Portuguese authorities if they wanted to.

Kate McCann gave her statement on the 4th May 2007 at 2:20pm

Kate McCann says that her husband left the restaurant and before he returned he spoke to another holiday maker. She doesn’t say Jane Tanner leaves during the time she is discussing Gerry McCann being away from the table, but she does mention Jane left at 9:15pm and saw a man carrying a child.

She doesn’t state it was while Gerry McCann was away from the restaurant. She adds Jane Tanners check in to her statement at the end of the timeline rather than in chronological order. Kate McCann doesn’t add much emphasis to what Jane Tanner supposedly saw, she even says that it would be best asking Jane Tanner more about this.

This man Jane Tanner supposedly seen could potentially have been the abductor but Kate McCann did not discuss this in much detail with the investigator in her first statement. Gerry McCann was exactly the same and also suggested that the investigator spoke to Jane Tanner regarding this.

Once again, that is another group member who does not say that Jane left at the time Gerry McCann was away from the table. She gives the time Jane Tanner leaves but doesn’t say if it was before, during, or after Gerry McCann’s check.

During Kate McCann’s interview which started at 2:20pm, David Payne gave his statement at 2:45pm.

David Payne did say that Jane Tanner left at some point during the meal. He doesn’t give a specific time she left, neither does he say if it was during the time GerryMcCann was away from the table.

This does not confirm that Jane left at the same time as Gerry was away, therefore would not be classed as credible.

On the same day, 4th May 2007, Rachael Oldfield gave her statement much later, in the evening, at 7:20pm. Once again, due to the group being witnesses, they would have all day to discuss the timeline.

Rachael Oldfield states that Jane left after Gerry McCann and states Jane returned but doesn’t state the time Gerry McCann returned.

Rachael Oldfield does not state that Jane Tanner checked while Gerry McCann was talking to Jeremy Wilkins.

We are not going to post any extracts from Fiona Payne or Dianne Webster who gave their statements nexts, as they do not mention who or when people left the restaurant on the 4th May 2007.

The final person to give their statement was Russell O’Brien.

Before we go in to his statements we will give our opinion on our findings so far.

Jane Tanner lied about her check at the time Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins were talking.

Due to Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins standing on the McCann’s side of the road and not seeing Jane walk past, as well as other members of the group who don’t confirm Jane’s check happened during Gerry McCann’s check, we believe this proves a lie.

This lie was created mainly to give Russell O’Brien his alibi.

Jane Tanner was told to say she saw a stranger, which she did do by telling the Portuguese authorities at 1am that she saw a man during Gerry McCann’s check at 9:15pm. She didn’t know that Gerry McCann had seen Jeremy Wilkins until after she had told the Portuguese authorities about this man she supposedly saw.

Due to this, she could not change the statement she gave to the officer she originally spoke to, and therefore had to keep the time the same as what she had said, as well as add Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins in to her lie, thats why in her first statement she says it was while Gerry McCann was talking to Jeremy Wilkins without thinking this through. (We will go in to this in more detail when we explain Gerry McCann’s lie)

We will now continue with Russell O’Brien’s statement.

Russell O’Brien was the last member of the the group to give their statement on the 4th May 2007 at 9:45pm. He had been able to discuss with almost every member of the group what had been asked and what they had said.

Russell O’Brien says Jane Tanner left and returned during Gerry McCann’s check. He also says that Gerry McCann spoke to Jeremy Wilkins.

Russell O’Brien also talks about Jane Tanner leaving a second time. This was not mentioned by some of the other members of the group, but we will discuss this in Russell O’Brien’s lie.

To conclude Jane Tanner’s lie.

We believe that due to what the group say in their statements and the lack of evidence that Jane Tanner left when Gerry McCann left, as according to Gerry McCann, Kate McCann and Matthew Oldfield who gave their statements earlier when the group had less time to discuss their timeline, compared to the the much later statements who then include Jeremy Wilkins and Gerry McCann talking.

To add emphasis to this conclusion there is Jeremy Wilkins statement and sketch that describes exactly where himself and Gerry McCann was standing when Jane Tanner supposedly walked past.

He stated that he could clearly see, and that he did not see or hear anyone walk past himself or Gerry McCann while they were talking, and he didn’t see the man carrying a child.

OUR CONCLUSION FROM THESE FINDINGS IS THAT JANE TANNER LIED

Now Jane Tanner’s lie will prove that Gerry McCann lied.
